The earliest garage door opener, invented in 1926 by C.J. Johnson, was quite basic. Chain-driven, it simply lifted and lowered the door when activated from within the garage. Remotes weren’t invented until much later. Over the years, several additional features were added, including photoelectric sensors, designed to prevent the door from closing in the event an obstruction is detected; manual release which allows you to disengage the opener from inside the garage to open and close the door by hand; and an assortment of other convenient and safe features.
Other drive systems were also adopted; there are now chain-drive, belt-drive, and screw-drive. The belt-drive is certainly the Goldilocks of openers. Today, there are also high-tech garage door openers, which once connected to your home’s Wi-Fi network permit remote monitoring and operation using your smartphone. Two of the newest high-tech openers, currently available from LiftMaster®, are the WLED with corner-to-corner LED lighting, 24-hour battery backup, and Wi-Fi connectivity; and the 8500W wall-mount opener with many of the same features.
